EFax turns out to be no more eager to take press calls than it is to cancel customer accounts.
The most well known chatbots have generally been given a female persona. Do nerdy guys lack the gumption to engage a real flesh and blood young woman in conversation? Is it really more satisfying to talk to a chatbot that’s restricted to a handful of vapid phrases than to interact with another human being?
In February of 2013, I wrote a blog post about how to create a virtual agent / intelligent assistant for your business.
At the time, I presented my findings about two virtual agent technology companies that I’d researched: My Cber Twin and Chatbots4
Chatbots4u is still up and running, but a quick look at their website has me wondering what direction they’re heading in.
Chatbots4u apparently offers hosting services for business-focused intelligent assistants, but the site’s primary goal seems to be to offer a free platform for the creation and hosting of recreational chatbots.
Both companies have gone through some changes since I tried them out over a year ago.
My Cber Twin was acquired by IBM back in the spring of this year. The less effective the chatbot is at understanding the customer's request, the more e Fax saves by not fulfilling it!To pursue this hypothesis, I left a message with e Fax's "investor relations" spokeswoman, who, I was told, fielded media inquiries, and set about learning all I could about chatbots.A few days ago I posted a column ("Breaking Up Is Hard To Do") relating the difficulty I encountered when I tried to cancel my e Fax account. After a couple of false starts, I ended up engaged in a live chat with "Steve S.," a sort of Ricky Roma character—if one can imagine Ricky Roma working off a company script—who did everything he could to avoid fulfilling my simple request. wasn't Ricky Roma so much as Ricky Robot—that my live chat was not with an actual human, but with one of the burgeoning number of robots being deployed to perform customer service, the simplest and most familiar being the soothing female voice who retrieves phone numbers when you dial 411 ("City and state, please"). EFax makes a virtue of the primitive nature of chatbot technology by using a chatbot to field "cancel my service" requests online.I’d be surprised if studies on just this topic aren’t underway at a university somewhere.
